Jerry Walters is Fehr & Peers Chief Technical Officer and leader of the firm’s Cool Connections initiative on transportation strategies for sustainable climate, energy and health.  He has over thirty years experience in transportation planning and engineering, and has participated on committees responsible for defining best practices for integrated land use, transportation and climate change methods for the California Transportation Commission, Air Resources Board, Department of Housing and Community Development, Caltrans, and the American Public Transit Association.  He has also directed development of project evaluation methods and metrics for the US EPA and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.  Mr. Walters is a co-author of the 2008 book Growing Cooler – the Evidence on Urban Development and Climate Change published by the ULI. He also led development of smart growth travel analysis methods for Sacramento Regional Blueprint study, San Joaquin Valley Growth Response study, and smart growth planning for the San Diego and San Luis Obispo regions, and sustainable development plan throughout the US.

Ron Milam directs Fehr & Peers Travel Demand Forecasting and Impact Assessment Discipline Groups.  He has managed a variety of transportation planning and traffic engineering studies and also provides expert witness testimony, and taught transportation and evaluation courses for the University of California. He has an extensive background in travel demand model development and applications, traffic operations analysis, micro-simulation modeling, and transportation impact studies involving NEPA and CEQA. Much of his experience has involved direct working relationships with local agencies to help develop balanced transportation and land use plans.   Mr. Milam is also principal investigator on a review and analysis of the programs and tools available for use in estimating and projecting greenhouse gas emissions related to land use and transportation planning scenarios for the State of Washington Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development.

Matt Haynes is a member of Fehr & Peers’ Smart Growth Discipline Group and CoolConnections initiative team.  He is an expert in sustainable transportation strategies for urban environments and has managed a variety of complex and innovative studies while at the company.  He has an extensive background in integrated transportation and land use studies, bicycle and pedestrian planning, multimodal corridor planning, and in emerging travel modes such as neighborhood electric vehicles.  Mr. Haynes is currently lead investigator for a research effort examining the relationship between walking activity and the built environment across several regions in the United States.  He is a registered Professional Engineer in California as well as a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.  In his free time, he enjoys backpacking, cycling, backcountry skiing, and photography.

Lauren Michele (Hilliard), Principal/Founder of Policy in Motion, recently completed her Master’s of Science degree in Transportation Technology and Policy from the University of California, Davis after working as a transportation planning professional in Sacramento at Fehr & Peers for several years, a climate change policy analyst in Washington D.C. at the Center for Clean Air Policy, and an air quality program assistant at the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District. During her time at UC Davis, Lauren Michele built strategic relationships at the state and federal level which aided her work as a transportation and climate change policy analyst at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies’ Urban Land Use and Transportation Center (ULTRANS) – focusing on the links between California’s Senate Bill 375 and developing federal climate/energy legislation and the transportation reauthorization. Her firm focuses exclusively on federal and state climate policy analysis, education and implementation as it pertains to transportation and land use plans and projects which improve network management and decrease vehicle-miles-traveled. Tien-Tien Chan is pursuing a Masters degree at Stanford University’s Management Science & Engineering department, with a focus on energy and environmental policy.  She has a keen interest in promoting sustainable, efficient transportation solutions to fight global warming problems.  She sees much progress in the technology side but would like to see transportation planning, built environment, and multi-modal solutions emphasized more in global climate change solutions.  At Stanford she has worked on creating a supply curve of implementation measures for California’s Assembly Bill 32, including analysis of smart growth related strategies.  The draft report has been submitted to the California Air Resources Board for review.  Beyond research and school work, she strives to stay up-to-date on the topics of climate change and transportation.  She recently attended a Driving Sustainability conference in Iceland to learn the latest advances of electric and hydrogen vehicles and their progress to mass market role-out.  She is also a scholarship recipient for the upcoming RAIL-Volution conference in San Francisco to discuss smart-growth, multi-modal transportation solutions with local advocates and policy makers.  Tien-Tien has worked with Fehr &Peers on pedestrian/bicycle planning, mixed-use trip generation modeling, 4-D modeling, and a variety of other projects.
